METHODOLOGY

Three Cognitive Tools that need to work well for a yo8ung child to engage and enjoy academics

Scanning and Surveying Information

This cognitive tool concernes the manner in which a child scans and surveys information. Young children typically scann information slowly and direct attion only to narrow segments of the field of information available. With age, the child scans more actively and sweeps attention across larger segments of the field of information.

Focusing Attention While Ignoring Distractions

This cognitive tool defines the manner in which a child focuses attention on information that is relevant while at the same time ignores distrations that are irrelevant. Young children focus attention on relevant and irrelevant information almost equally. With age, the child gradually focuses attention on what is relevant while simultaneously-withholding attention from information that is distracting and irrelevant.

Remembering Information

This cognitive tool concernes the manner in which a child remembers information over time - how a child constructs memory images and compares them with present perceptions. The young child typically constructs fuzzy images of past information and fuses these with present perceptions so that suble similarities are missed. With age, the child constructs sharper images so that suble similarities and differences between past and present images are noticed.
